HONIARA CITY COUNCIL MARKET ORDINANCE MUST BE UPHELD
May 17, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The first quarter events for this year, 2023…
DESPITE peaceful dialogue between the Honiara City Council (HCC), the national Government and the Fishing Village Market Vendors, Honiara City Council will continue to uphold its Market Ordinance.
Following Honiara City Council (HCC) previous notice to close Fishing Village and other illegal markets after deadline 31 January 2023, HCC still continues to dialogue with owners of the Fishing Village property and community leaders within the city.
“We held a meeting with community leaders and owners of the property on Monday 30th of January, 2023. Discussion focused on the closure of the Fishing Village Market. In principle, everybody agreed that the current market set up and operations need reviewing.”
Another meeting will be held next week on Monday 6th February 2023; therefore, we expect some mutually agreed outcome from that meeting.
However, in the meantime, HCC Law Enforcement Team will continue with its duty to demolish other illegal markets in Honiara.
Honiara City Council continue to appeal for understanding and support of vendors of the Fishing Village market and other markets, and also residents of Honiara City in general.
“HCC again has kindly asked the street vendors to work together with HCC and the national government to address the long-lasting issue, and quickly prepare Honiara city for the upcoming South Pacific Games (SPG) in November this year, 2023.”
