In a significant step towards a cleaner environment, the Honiara City Council (HCC) collaborated with JICA Alumni volunteers for a small-scale cleanup at the Mataniko River mouth.
Japanese, local volunteers and HCC staff gathered to collect rubbish, focusing on plastic bottles and other pollutants that threatened the local ecosystem and community health.

Wilson Eta, director of the Waste Management and Control Division, expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the HCC. “This joint effort reflects our shared commitment to keeping Honiara clean and reducing the harmful impact of waste on our environment,” he stated.
Mr. Eta also highlighted that such initiatives improve the city’s cleanliness and raise awareness of environmental stewardship among residents.
The cleanup effort underscores the HCC’s and JICA’s ongoing dedication to sustainable waste management in Honiara.
Volunteers collected substantial amounts of waste that had accumulated at the river mouth, a critical area where rubbish often flows from the city and affects local marine life.
Eta also encouraged residents to be more mindful of waste disposal practices. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in keeping public spaces clean and protecting natural resources.
This partnership between the HCC and JICA Alumni demonstrates the power of local and international cooperation in tackling environmental challenges.
It serves as a reminder that a cleaner, healthier city is achievable through collective action.
The waste management director explained that they are looking forward to fostering future joint efforts with any organization to clean up the Mataniko Riverbank, especially focusing on plastic bottles and other pollutants that are harmful to the environment.
